In view of the emergence of cases of mpox in non-endemic countries and in line with international health regulations, a multi-country outbreak of mpox has been declared a public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO). Border Health Services Pakistan (BHS-P) has issued the following guidelines to passengers arriving to and departing from Pakistan.
- Mpox is a viral illness caused by the mpox virus, a specie of the genus Orthopoxvirus.
- Mpox signs and symptoms usually begin within a week but can start from day 1 – 21 after exposure. Typically for mpox, fever, muscle aches and sore throat appear first. For some people, the first symptom of mpox is a rash, while others may have different symptoms. The mpox rash begins on the face and spreads over the body, extending to the palms of the hands and soles of the feet and evolves over 2-4 weeks in stages - macules, papules, vesicles, and pustules.
- Passengers experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above should avoid air travel. If any are observed during check-in or boarding, the passenger shall be denied boarding.
- All passengers travelling to Pakistan must complete and submit the Personal Health Declaration Form to the Border Health Services – Pakistan, upon arrival. - Health Declaration form.
